A straight truck is a different question: it is outside the conspicuity rule but still owes the lamps and reflectors on its own list.

What actually gets written up at a roadside inspection over markings?

The two ordinary ones are a number that is missing and a number that is no longer legible — faded, half peeled, or covered by a rack or a tarp strap. Legibility is part of the rule, not a courtesy, which is why a set that has gone chalky counts even though every character is technically still there.
