What size vinyl should I use for a trailer?

What the markings actually need to cover

Trailer identification is not one single federal rule the way the USDOT number is — it is a mix of what your operation needs and what a few states require. Here is the practical checklist we work from:

Legibility, same standard. Whatever goes on the trailer should meet the same sharp-contrast, daylight-legible test used for the power unit — an inspector reading one set of markings should be able to read the other.
Unit numbers. Not federally mandated, but every fleet of more than one truck needs them for dispatch, maintenance tracking and matching a trailer to a load.
GVWR / weight lettering. Some states and some operations require the gross vehicle weight rating marked on the unit — check your state rule if you run intrastate.
Hazmat placards are separate. If you haul regulated hazardous materials, placards are their own DOT requirement with their own size and diamond format — not the same as lettering.
Kept legible. Faded or peeling trailer lettering reads just as badly at a scale house as a faded power-unit marking, even without one specific federal cite for it.
