A great decal is half the job — the other half is a clean install. Here is the same process we use in the shop, simplified so you can do it in your own yard.
1. Clean and dry the surface
Wash the panel, then wipe it down with isopropyl alcohol and let it fully dry. Wax, road film and dust are the number-one cause of decals that lift at the edges.
2. Position before you peel
Tape the decal in place and step back. Use a level for door lettering. Once it looks right, run a strip of tape down the middle as a hinge so you can peel one half at a time.
3. Squeegee from the center out
Peel the backing, then use the squeegee we include free with every order to press from the center toward the edges in overlapping strokes. Working outward pushes air to the edge instead of trapping it.
4. Pop any stragglers
A tiny bubble? Prick it with a pin at the edge and squeegee it flat. Then peel the transfer tape back slowly at a sharp angle, and you are done.
What the surface has to be
Vinyl fails at the surface far more often than it fails at the technique. Three things have to be true before you peel anything: the panel is clean down to the paint, it is dry, and it is between about 50 and 90°F. Wax is the one people miss — it is invisible, it is on most well-kept trucks, and adhesive cannot grip through it. Wash, then wipe with isopropyl alcohol, then let it flash off completely.
Cold is the other. Below about 50°F the adhesive never fully wets out, and a set applied on a January morning will start lifting at the corners in spring. If the truck has been sitting outside overnight, bring it in and let the panel come up to temperature — the air being warm is not the same as the steel being warm.
When to use water and when not to
Small pieces go on dry. A USDOT number set is short, the placement is forgiving, and dry tack means you are finished in minutes. Big pieces — a company name across a door, anything you would be upset to place crooked — go on wet, because a thin film of soapy water lets you slide it into position instead of committing on contact.
Two or three drops of dish soap in a spray bottle of water is the whole recipe. More soap is not better; it slows the cure and can leave the edges sitting loose for days. Our full step-by-step for both methods, including the tape-hinge technique, lives on the install guide.
Fixing what went wrong
A bubble under a letter is a pin and a squeegee, not a re-order: prick it at the edge, not the middle, and push the air out toward the hole. A letter that lifts with the transfer tape means you are peeling too fast and at too steep an angle — lay it back down, squeegee it again firmly, and pull the tape back on itself almost flat against the panel. A wrinkle in a big wet-applied piece can be peeled back to the wrinkle, re-floated and squeegeed again; that is the whole reason to use water on large work.
How long before I can wash the truck?
Give it 24 to 48 hours, and up to 72 if you applied it wet. The adhesive needs that time to reach full bond. Keep a pressure washer off the edges for the first week.
It is 40°F outside. Can I still apply?
Not well. Below roughly 50°F the adhesive does not wet out properly and the edges lift later. Warm the panel, not just the air — a truck that sat outside overnight is colder than the shop it is parked in.
A letter came up with the transfer tape. Did I ruin it?
Almost never. Lay it back down, squeegee it harder, and peel the tape slower and much flatter — back on itself, close to the surface, rather than up and away.
Do I need the wet method for USDOT numbers?
No. Number sets are small and dry application is faster and cures sooner. Save the water for long company names and large graphics where placement is the risk.
One material breaks every rule above, and it is worth knowing before you reach for the spray bottle: perforated window film goes on dry, always, because water forced into the perforations makes the film rupture at the holes under a squeegee.
